In 2013 at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015) to recognise the importance of light-based technologies in meeting the needs of humankind.

The official launch will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 19 and 20 January 2015.

Many organisations are sponsors of this project, including the International Light Association (ILA) and Pauline Allen is attending the meeting as the official ILA representative to promote the therapeutic use of light.

The programme for the opening event promises many memorable sessions and there will be a large number of events scheduled throughout the world during 2015 to raise awareness about the importance of light and optical technologies in our lives, our futures, and for the development of society.
