You are here: Home / Introduction

Welcome

We hope our website will provide you with practical information and support relating to learning, sensory, developmental and emotional difficulties.

Here we share with you our experience of working for over twelve years with children and adults suffering from dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech & language difficulties, delayed speech, ADD, ADHD, hyperactivity, Asperger's syndrome, autism, developmental delay, Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Neuro-Developmental Delay, depression and anxiety, sleeping and eating disorders, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and many other conditions which limit their performance and quality of life. You'll find further information on these conditions in the "What they say" section.

"Giving someone a label does not tell you what's wrong"

Pauline Allen, Principal of The Sound Learning Centre

We do not, however, diagnose conditions and are mainly interested in the actual behaviour and sensory responses of the people that come to us. By looking in detail at how the person behaves and responds, it is possible to isolate specific areas that can be developed further. We know that changes in the way the senses receive and the brain processes external stimuli, often lead to significant improvements in ability, behaviour and performance.

Typical behaviours we see in children with learning and sensory difficulties and in adults whose performance is affected are: hearing difficulties including over sensitivity, speech & language difficulties or delay, light sensitivity, eating and sleeping disorders, balance and motor skills problems, attention and concentration difficulties, poor social and behavioural skills and low self-esteem and depressive tendencies. We explain more about these areas in the "What you see" section.

For an in-depth explanation of how our senses and other systems influence our ability, behaviour and performance, please visit the "What's behind it" section.

Understanding what may be going on for a person is a vital first step, but is of little use if it is not followed by taking active steps to rectify imbalances. We use sound, light, colour and physical exercises to address the physiological systems and retrain the senses. Find out what we offer in our "How we help" section.

In the "Next steps" section we will answer some common questions and provide guidance of where to go from here to improve ability, behaviour and performance.

We are a London based Centre of Excellence for people of all ages wishing to make significant improvements in their ability to learn, in the use of their senses, in their ability to develop and in the strengthening of their emotional well-being. We currently have outreach programmes in Scotland and Ireland and we also travel to treat groups in other parts of the U.K. and abroad.

This website provides much down-to-earth information and suggestions on how to move forward. If you want to know more, please give us a call on 020 – 8882 1060 – we're only too pleased to be of help.

Suggestion

Find out more about how the senses influence our ability, behaviour and performance and come to one of our Open House events – it's free and there is absolutely no obligation. For many people it's an eye opener and a starting point of making significant changes – a very worthwhile investment of a few hours of your time.
