either”
Gore Vidal

These are brief sessions for groups of people who encounter, or are helping people with, learning and sensory difficulties. In addition to our own Open House events at our Centre in London, we also offer talks and presentations on our work to special interest groups such as schools, health and social support organisations, parent support groups and other interested parties.
These sessions are also intended for audiologists, opticians, optometrists, teachers, speech & language therapists, special needs teachers, educational psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, occupational psychologists, GPs, nurses, health workers and social workers.
Talks mostly range from 20 minutes to an hour in length followed by a formal or informal question and answer session and provide a 'flavour' of the work we do and include examples of possible interventions and their outcomes. No special visual aid support is required. Handouts are provided. Normally no charge will be made for talks in the London area, but a small charge may be made to cover travelling expenses for venues farther afield. Availability: continuous.
Presentations mostly range from one to two hours in length followed by a formal or informal question and answer session and provide a more in-depth overview of the work we do and normally include a small number of video clips. DVD video playback facility with monitor(s) or video projection required in addition to a flipchart easel to show display boards. Handouts are provided. A small charge may be made to cover expenses. Availability: continuous.

Pauline Allen gave a talk on the underlying causes of learning and developmental difficulties and what can be done about them at the KDYS Youth Centre, Fairhill, Killarney, County Kerry in Ireland on Wednesday 30 January 2008.
Pauline places great emphasis and value on offering in-depth information and practical guidance on the background to many of the conditions and behaviours that clients come to her for. Discovering the underlying causes of learning, sensory, developmental and emotional difficulties is a vital first step on the road to transformation.
This talk was an ideal opportunity to find out more about how the senses influence our ability, behaviour and performance. Attendees learned about what can be done to tackle conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech and language difficulties, AD(H)D, autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, developmental delay, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Neuro-Developmental Delay and depression.
They also discovered what happens when children or adults hit stumbling blocks and learned what can lie behind behavioural and emotional difficulties, eating and sleeping disorders and many other conditions which limit the performance and quality of life. Guidance and practical tips were given on what can be done to lighten the load.
Pauline talked about her work and presented a number of typical case studies. Attendees were also able to hear client comments through a few short videos, and there was time to ask questions and address specific concerns.
Pauline commented: “I came to County Kerry on a number of occasions last year and we have offered our therapies to a wide range of clients in the area. We are committed to provide long term support to both existing and new clients in Ireland and I plan to return to Emerald Isle on a regular basis from now on to offer talks, consultations, assessments and treatments.”
The talk was free and for many people it was an eye opener and a starting point for making significant changes – a very worthwhile investment of a few hours of time. For more information, please contact The Sound Learning Centre on telephone +44 (0)20 8882 1060, or by e-mail.
An outreach programme offering treatments locally will take place during March 2008. Please contact us on telephone +44 (0)20 8882 1060, or by e-mail for further details.

Pauline Allen gave a talk on Dyslexia and other learning difficulties for the Dyslexia Parents Association of Thessaloniki at the Diakonia Hotel, Pilaia Thessaloniki Sunday 17 February 2008.
Pauline started her career in this field as a specialised Dyslexia tutor and she places great emphasis and value on offering in-depth information and practical guidance on the background to Dyslexia and other conditions that limit a person's ability to learn and develop to their full potential.
This talk was an ideal opportunity to find out more about how the senses influence our ability, behaviour and performance. Attendees learned about what can be done to tackle Dyslexia and other conditions such as Dyspraxia, speech and language difficulties, AD(H)D, Asperger’s Syndrome, autism and behavioural and emotional difficulties.
Pauline talked about her work and presented a number of typical case studies. Attendees were also to hear client comments through a few short videos, and there was time to ask questions and address specific concerns they had. The talk was in English with translation into Greek.
Pauline commented: “I am very excited to have been invited to come to beautiful Thessaloniki and address parents who have to deal with the difficulties that their children encounter each and every day. If through my work I can help just one child and lighten the load for just one parent, it will have been worthwhile to have come to Thessaloniki, but I of course hope to meet and help many more. If there is sufficient interest I plan to return to Thessaloniki in the near future to see individual clients and offer personalised treatments.”
For many people the talk was an eye opener and a starting point for making significant changes – a very worthwhile investment of a few hours of time.
